Stephen Hoffman is the owner and managing attorney of Hoffman Law Office, P.C., a firm focusing primarily on business and intellectual property law issues, but that also handles real estate (residential and commercial) as well as family law matters. He has been licensed to practice law in Minnesota since 2011 and California since 2012. He lives near St. Paul.

Stephen received his J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School and an LL.M. in International Trade and Business Law from the University of Arizona. He received his B.A. in mathematics from Concordia University in Irvine, California.

During law school, Mr. Hoffman served as an editor for the Journal of Law & Inequality, a highly-respected law journal focusing on gender, race, and public policy issues, and also worked as a research assistant to a renowned international intellectual property professor. While he enjoyed writing and the more academic aspects of the law, Stephen actively sought out hands-on legal experience and has clerked with a law firm, interned with two federal judges, and practiced as a certified student attorney where he successfully argued multiple cases and motions in Arizona courts.

Community Involvement

Stephen contributes extensively to both the legal and nonlegal communities.

As a lawyer, he has judged several regional and national moot court competitions, such as the American Bar Association's National Moot Court Competition and the American College of Trial Lawyers' National Trial Competition. Stephen is a former director of continuing legal education with the Hennepin County Bar Association's New Lawyers Section, where he helped generate a record number of attendees for its annual full-day workshop for new lawyers. In addition to this, Stephen is also a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association's Rules of Professional Conduct Committee, which addresses ethical issues facing lawyers and the legal system. He also actively participates with several sections of the American Bar Association, including the Business Law Section and the Section of Antitrust Law.

Stephen also passionately volunteers with his law fraternity, Phi Alpha Delta, and sits on the executive board of his local alumni chapter. During its 2014 International Convention, he was awarded the William "Robbie" Robertson Outstanding Alumni Chapter Clerk Award for his contributions. Moreover, he helps oversee all of the law school and alumni chapters in Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota as an Assistant District Justice.

Mr. Hoffman has been invited to present several seminars and continuing legal education programs at law schools and legal conferences. He primarily speaks on digital evidence, electronic discovery, and legal writing.

Outside of the law, Mr. Hoffman also donates his time to his local Mensa chapter as an essay judge for the American Mensa Education and Research Foundation Scholarship Program, a program which awards more than $80,000 each year to current and aspiring college students.

In addition to volunteering his time to the community, Stephen is an avid writer and has written articles and papers on many different areas of law such as digital evidence, corporate bankruptcy and financial regulation, and privacy rights. His writings have been cited by many legal journals, academic papers, and businesses, including the:

      • Alabama Law Review;
      • George Mason Law Review;
      • Brigham Young University Law Review;
      • New York University Journal of Law & Liberty; and
      • Texas International Law Journal.

In a 2011 issue, the Rutgers Computer and Technology Law Journal included two of Stephen's articles in a compilation of "the most important and timely articles on computers, technology, and the law." He's been cited by articles and papers published throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia.

He has also contributed his writing and editing skills for multiple publications of the American Bar Association.

His papers can be found online at the Social Science Research Network (SSRN), Google Scholar, and the Bepress Repository.
